More Venue price and availability information

John Biel

It may have been decades since you last heard the expression “population explosion.” It always came up in serious discussions of the expanding count of humankind and what would be required to sustain it. Demand for food, shelter, and energy naturally topped all concerns. Somewhere way, way down the list was “how will all these people run errands?” In our time, the answer to at least that question has become clear: Crossovers.

Hyundai Venue Denim Edition

The Venue competes most directly with the Nissan Kicks–both are value-focused crossovers at the small end of the subcompact SUV class, and both are front-wheel drive only–all-wheel drive is not available.

Sort-of-almost sport-utility vehicles have undergone their own population explosion, with brand after brand fruitfully multiplying and seemingly filling every crevice the market affords. Is it any wonder, then, that for 2020 Hyundai is adding the Venue as its fifth crossover (sixth if you count the California-only Nexo fuel-cell vehicle)?

The Venue supplants the 5.1-inch-longer Kona as the entry-level SUV in Hyundai’s lineup. It is one of two newcomers to the subcompact class (the Buick Encore GX is the other) and is one of the smallest, most affordable vehicles in a segment that has ballooned to 16 entries—plus eight more hoity-toity premium jobs.

Test Drive: 2020 Hyundai Kona Ultimate

2020 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition

Even in topline Denim trim, the Venue’s cabin ambiance isn’t plush, but it’s surprisingly pleasant considering the bottom line is just a bit more than $23K. Controls are nicely laid out and easy to use, and welcome equipment such as heated seats and keyless entry/push-button start are standard along with a suite of active safety features.

Anything under the general heading of SUV conjures up visions of off-road—or at least rough-road—prowess, but the Venue is part of a subcompact subgenre that leaves that kind of tough stuff to others. It is a front-wheel-drive vehicle, period. We’ll defer to the Venue’s Consumer Guide “Best Buy” report to explain how it stacks up against some other leading vehicles in the class, but it is inexpensive. Starting prices (with delivery) for the three-tiered model lineup run from $18,470 to $23,170. CG testers sampled a top-level Denim model that came to $23,305 with the addition of a set of carpeted floor mats.

2020 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition

The Denim’s exterior color and interior upholstery and both exclusive to the model, and they’re mandatory–no other colors are offered. Front-seat space is good for average size adults, but big and tall drivers will need to put their seats far back–where the front seatbacks can significantly intrude into the rear door apertures, as seen here.

Hand-me-downs are a fact of life in lots of big families, but baby Venue’s powerplant is all its own within the Hyundai crossover clan. It is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine joined to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT)—though base SE models can also be had with a 6-speed manual gearbox. With just 121 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque (that doesn’t peak until 4500 rpm), acceleration is modest and hardly exciting. There is a selectable “Sport” mode because this is 2020, and everybody does it. In the Venue this means delayed “upshifts” from the CVT that are none too satisfying in street driving. Out on the highway, Sport seems to deliver a bit more midrange vim and vigor, but the setting mostly just leaves the little engine to work harder, not necessarily better.

The silver lining is fuel economy. The 1.6/CVT pairing is EPA-rated at 30 mpg in city driving, 34 mpg on the highway, and 32 combined. When this driver topped off after 50 test miles, 65 percent of them covered in city conditions, he recorded 30.6 mpg, but CG editors’ collective mileage neared 36 mpg.

Test Drive: 2020 Kia Soul GT-Line Turbo

2020 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition

Given its extra-small exterior dimensions, the Venue offers more cargo room than you might expect–18.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 31.9 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded. One clever touch: the hard rear cargo cover (not shown) can be slid down to rest vertically behind the rear seats, enabling you to carry tall cargo without removing the cover entirely.

Ride is pleasantly smooth, with no vibration or looseness. Hit a bump, though, and it will be heard and felt in the cabin. The Venue steers easily, but without much feedback to the driver. Where are the limits when cornering? Take your best guess.

Where this new Hyundai truly earns its stripes is in the areas of passenger comfort and cargo room. There’s good front-seat headroom and legroom on seats with a pleasingly upright position for a good view of the road. Headroom is also generous in the second row, where legroom is a nice surprise in a vehicle this small. Two adults (or maybe three teens) will fit comfortably on the rear bench seat. Behind-the-seat cargo space is modest, but the 60/40-split rear seats fold flat to open up considerable load space—and absent all-wheel drive, liftover is fairly low to ease loading. There is lots of informal storage space under the floor around the spare tire.

The Denim Edition is available in one color scheme: a white roof over a particular shade of blue called—surprise!—Denim. The same shade appears in the interior, including on the fabric-and-leatherette seats. Off-white plastics and leatherette on the armrests, upper console, and lower dash provide a crisp contrast. The vast areas of unpadded plastic are grained and finished to a degree that makes the vehicle seem more premium than it really is—a nice trick. There are honest-to-goodness upmarket touches on hand, though. Standard equipment includes navigation, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob to match the interior color.

Test Drive: 2019 Nissan Kicks SR

2020 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition

All Venues have a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that puts out 121 horsepower. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard on the topline Denim Edition and optional on the midline SELs in place of their standard 15-inch alloys.

Inputs to the audio system (with standard satellite radio) are easy to make on the 8-inch touchscreen. The climate-control system has big, convenient dials, one for setting temperature and another for selecting fan speed, with buttons for front and rear defrosters. Cabin storage rests with a big glove box, small console box under a sliding armrest, and a mesh pouch on the back of the front passenger seat. There are dual cup holders in the console and storage pockets in all four doors with bottle holders in the rear ones.

Standard safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, and blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts. The Venue Denim rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels, and boasts heated external mirrors, body-color mirror shells and door handles, LED projector headlights, roof rails, keyless entry and starting, dual USB charging ports, and Hyundai’s Blue Link connected services.

The population explosion of crossovers has opened the field to all shapes and sizes of vehicles. With the Venue, Hyundai seems to be making the case that there’s still at least a little room for another one.

2020 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition

Hyundai’s new-for-2020 Venue impressed us enough that we’ve made it a mid-year addition to our 2020 Best Buy list. The Venue doesn’t have a surplus of power, space, or comfort/convenience features, but it does offer more of those virtues than you might expect at its penny-pinching prices–along with great fuel economy and a charming personality.

Feature: Choosing the Right Car to Suit Your Needs

Navigating the Path to Four-Wheel Bliss

This article may contain affiliate links

A car is a big investment. No car comes particularly cheap. Whether you save up and purchase a vehicle outright or take out a loan or finance plan and fork out for monthly instalments plus interest, you’re going to want to make sure that you’re getting the most for your money. The first step towards this is finding the best car to suit your needs. The perfect car for one person could be a nightmare vehicle for another. We all have different requirements and preferences, so it’s important to be logical and practical when choosing your car. This will help you to get the most out of it and will ensure that it’s something that makes your day-to-day life easier rather than more difficult. Here are just a few areas to focus on and links to our tests of some representative vehicles to get you started on the right path!

Size

Mazda Miata MX-5

It may look cool in the showroom, but what about your second best friend

First, consider size. Sure, two-seater sports cars may look good. But will you ever need to be able to carry more than just one passenger? Will you be using the car to head to the store and get your grocery shopping? Or will you ever drive it to an airport and need to be able to fit a suitcase in the back? Size really is an important factor for anyone. A sports car will be great for one person but entirely impractical for another. A minivan will be ideal for someone but be way too large for someone else!

Doors

The number of doors on a vehicle can also impact whether it will work for you or not. If you rarely have more than one passenger, or if a passenger can easily get into the back of a car without the extra doors in the back, a two- or three-door could be fine for you. If you have a baby, this will be a nightmare, as you’ll struggle getting the little one in and out of their car seat on a daily basis.

Propulsion

Some of us don’t care what kind of fuel goes in a car as long as we know what to put in when we fill up. Others of us take a more environmentally conscious approach and would prefer an electric powered car or a hybrid – you can find out how do hybrid cars work here.

Extra Features or “Add-Ons”

Apple CarPlay

Features can make or break your life with your car

If you have add-ons that you feel you can’t get by without, it’s important to find a car that can provide them. Things like rear parking sensors, USB charging ports, heated side mirrors and more may be important to you! Our tests always give you a run-down of the features available at each trim level of a model.

Cost

Ultimately, a lot of decision making will fall down to cost. When you buy a car, you need to opt for something that will fall into your budget. Be reasonable and don’t overspend.

These are just a few different factors that could impact what kind of car you eventually settle on. Take them into consideration to help yourself find the ideal car the first time round!

Will Adding a Spoiler Even Effect Your Project Cars Performance?

A car needs to be well balanced to perform properly on a track. Spoilers were introduced to provide downforce in a car to improve their handling and to avoid them from taking off at very high speeds.

So to decide whether you will be needing a spoiler, depends mainly on your use case and your cars limits.

Generally spoilers are also added onto exotic sedans just to add up to the looks of it. It doesn’t do any good in managing the aerodynamics of the car or for providing any downforce. Adding a beefier spoiler to your family sedan can just result in increased drag that can result in even worse fuel economy. But manufacturers also consider adding them in some of their sedans at sports trim, just to make it look racing oriented, and to improve the aesthetics.

A Spoilers role comes into play at high speeds at about 150 to 300+ kmph. A car generates an amount of lift too at high speed, so to restrain it from taking off at high speed, Spoilers provide sufficient downforce to keep the car pushed on to the road. Spoilers are deployed to provide the car, an added normal force, which increases the frictional force between all for tires, that can help it steer into sharp corners at even higher speeds.

Spoilers are considered unnecessary in front wheel drive vehicles, but it also plays a major role in them. A car without any spoilers, generates greater downforce at the front end, just due to the geometry of bonnet, fenders and windscreen. It helps bring the car’s Centre of Pressure i.e. the effective point of action of downforce, to the middle of the car’s body. This prevents car from oversteering in corners at high speeds.

Spoilers also help in providing improved braking at high speeds just due to the additional downforce at the rear end. Generally when brakes are applied, a cars momentum is shifted towards the front end, but a spoiler can allow increased braking at the rear end, to ensure stability and shorter breaking distances.

If your project car has the potential to reach high speeds such as around 250kmph and other components such as its suspension, braking and tires can keep up with the car at such high speeds. You can add a well-engineered spoiler to it, to get extra stability at higher speeds specially on tracks.

But if your car’s components aren’t meant to withstand highspeed maneuvering then it will be needing a lot of other upgrades before thinking of attaching a working spoiler at it. Also you can add a considerable spoiler that matches your sedans look just to give it a sporty look if you’re into that kind of thing.

Richard Branson Selling $500m Worth of Virgin Galactic Shares

If you’re looking to own a piece of space travel, now may be your chance. According to The Guardian, Richard Branson’s Virgin Group sent a statement to the New York Stock Exchange saying they intend on selling 25m shares. These shares account for over a fifth of Branson’s stake in Virgin Galactic and the total value was worth around $500m when the pre-announcement price of one of the shares is taken into account– $20. The expected $400m that Virgin Group raises from the selling of these shares will help support the group while the remaining money will go to Aabor, an Abu Dhabi investment fund. Virgin Group has been hit hard during the ongoing pandemic, with Virgin Atlantic taking a brunt of the damage. Virgin Group will use some of the raised funds to help prop up Virgin Atlantic.

1986 Honda Civic Si – Team Effort

CARPHOTO-4117

I wanted to get rid of 10s, so we did with relative ease. Accomplishing an objective like that is one thing, but doing the work in a 26-year-old classic Honda chassis is yet another. Shawn Hong of LasNevada and Vegas, was able to achieve his goal with time, patience, and good people in his corner.

Finding one in decent condition is no easy task, though many Honda enthusiasts would like to own a timeless Civic E-AT chassis. It seems as though fate was on Shawn’s side as timing proved essentially perfect for him in getting the car the thing is before you. He didn’t buy it recently to develop it and have something old fashioned, he purchased it a lot more than 10 years ago. In fact, it was the very first car he ever owned. I got it with my first paycheck from my first job, Shawn reminisces. Getting that first paycheck must have been a great feeling, as a young man who had just worked at his first job. Do you all keep in mind the first dollar that you earned? Did you are aware what you desired to buy with your newfound income? Or did you just want to input it away and stack it until the right time and item came along? Well, no matter what Shawn might have planned, that first check was about to disappear together with the quickness; he just didn’t know it yet. Understandably, Shawn drove instantly to the bank and deposited his money. But it didn’t continue in there even half of a company day. Literally, the day I put the funds in the bank I saw the car on the side of a street in the gas station having a ‘For Sale’ sign onto it asking for $800. The choice to purchase the car was made in that very instant, so Shawn turned back around to get and go his money. I went back and took all the money out of the bank again. LOL. Finding out the clutch in the vehicle was going out, he offered $500 to the seller, and theon the car. Well, he also isn’t ashamed to admit that it may not have access to been just basic driving that blew it out, as he did race the car as soon as he got it. After getting that fixed and making sure the car ran properly, Shawn had the car painted and readied for his day-to-day commute to school. Although he did use it as a commuter, he also continued with the lead foot of his, which eventually led to a difficulty a lot greater than just the clutch. I beat on the car day in and outing until the timing belt went out on me, he says. This time Shawn optimized on the circumstances and used the mishap as an opportunity to discover how to work on the automobile. I did everything except the machine work, Shawn states proudly. Not too long after that, he decided to swap out the original motor for any B16, and with the help of some friends, knocked out the swap. Unfortunately, the auto never ran quite right, which caused Shawn to find a professional shop, ultimately creating his becoming friends with Dennis of LDL Speed Shop of Las Vegas.

Shawn’s newfound relationship with LDL proved to be providential as proper experience and guidance are invaluable when doing something to a car. Dennis and Marissa are the most honest mechanics/shop owners in Las Vegas. Aside from the work being arguably the very best in Vegas, they learn how to treat their clients and have informed me many times generally if i was wasting my time and money, Shawn states. I made the decision to ‘go big’ and build an LS VTEC turbo setup. I needed to break 10s. So they got down to business and put together an LS block with Arias pistons and Eagle rods. Up top, a B16 head stuffed with a Skunk2 valvetrain and Integra GS-R camshafts was prepped for battle. For induction duties, a Precision T4 ball-bearing turbo was mated into a Neukin equal length manifold. The end results have yielded a rock-solid 464 hp and 341 lb-ft torque on LDL’s Mustang dyno. I told Dennis I needed to break 10s, which we did with relative ease. We ran a 10.7 at 132 mph. Eventually 9s are later onfor this car. Shawn intended to develop a well-rounded vehicle, so after achieving the first goal of running 10s, he took a break and focused on the exterior as well as engine bay. I made a decision to pretty up the car a bit with a bit of body and paint and did a wire tuck. I did all the work myself. Although the car looks great and possesses earned its place within the pages of Honda Tuning, Shawn isn’t satisfied. It looks great in pictures, but I would really love to redo the task again, eventually retune for the higher horsepower needed for our quarter-mile goals, and then find some good new wheels. Good luck on the quest for 9s, Shawn. We enjoy seeing what youturned offin 5So VW of America planned to unleash some modified Bugs in the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas last November, encouraging a number of tuners to have a go.

Without hesitation, VW tuning shops across the nation accepted the task to work in the iconic vehicle. These included fifteen52, FMS Automotive, Galpin Auto Sports, Rotiform, VW Vortex and even european car Magazine. Many of us put the Beetle under the knife in the hope of changing people’s perception concerning theThanks to Irwindale Event Center for the use of the oval track for our photography (irwindalespeedway.com)

Once the projects were completed we all headed to the 2012 SEMA Show to distribute the cars among the two million square-foot of trade exhibition space. The required effect was achieved; the cars winning the admiration and respect of visitors, with VWVortex taking home one of several show’s top honors: the PlayStation Gran Turismo – Best European award.

Yet with the cars widely dispersed, we thought it would be fun to gather them into one space and review everybody’s hard work. Our own Surf Bug was featured last month (EC 4/13), so we’ll brush over it here somewhat, and sadly the Vortex car was receiving work with the East Coast and unavailable for that shoot.

If you’re looking for inspiration for a Beetle project car, we’ve got a pretty diverse bunch for you to enjoy, whether you’re seeking show, go or both, that said.

fifteen52

We’ve all done it. We buy our significant other an automobile, swearing we won’t touch it. But as time passes, you wait for the other half to have over the honeymoon period with the car and swoop in, just adding a set of wheels. Then you just add an intake and exhaust. Finally, you decide to just add air suspension and gut the interior, sending the car for bodywork and paint plus a rare imported body kit. Like we said, we’ve all tried itintended to be hers – after all, she picked it all out at the dealership. But after a few months behind the wheel, Jay possessed a conversation with Matt Crooke at fifteen52 – specialists in wheel design and custom vehicle builds – and couldn’t help himself. He gave his girlfriend a few months with all the car after which began the build process for its debut at SEMA.

First up was the baseball-glove interior. Operating from a home workshop, a local interior guru (simply known as Adrian) helped Jay realize his vision for a stunning interior inspired from the original Audi TT.

After several long nights with Matt, the atmosphere Lift air suspension with AutoPilot v2 management was installed, allowing the car to sit very, really low. And since Matt and Jay return 15 years, they devised an idea to develop unique wheels for the car – producing a show-stopping set of 20 Tarmac TR three-piece wheels with brushed aluminum centers framed with polished lips. Needless to say, the new wheels took home the most notable prizes at SEMA for the bestlast year saw Rhuari McAulay finally drive home the car he’d waited 16 months to come. It would be his first modern, high performance Volkswagen and it was actually a treat to himself after an intense open-heart surgery operation one-year prior.

His 2012 Golf R was one he needed to own and, of course, the history starts with an enthusiast likely to keep it stock and enjoy it. But everyone knowsgatherings, events and shows whenever he is able to.

Living in Vancouver places him in close proximity to one of the best-known VW tuners on earth; HPA Motorsports. Highly regarded for its all-wheel drive and twin-turbo VR6 conversions, HPA fills all the gaps from mild to wild.

So while the Golf R was a departure from its traditional VR6 roots, company owner Marcel Horn realized it absolutely was an important car and sought out one as being a testbed for a few development parts.

Not only was Rhuari fortunate enough to be selected to receive these parts but Marcel had decided to take just four days to put together his car in time for the 2012 european car Tuner GP (EC 2/13).

He called the setup get fast quick , turning a four-door hatch into a genuine track contender. But don’t be fooled: while the kit isn’t excessively technical, it’s not something you could do in your driveway in three hours either, despite Marcel’s assertion it’s a DIY conversion.

Drawing on existing developments by long-time German tuning partner, HGP Turbo, HPA took a Garrett GT30-71/76 turbo and mated it with its own prototype exhaust manifold, high-flow fuel injectors and low-compression head spacer. These were paired with a new high-pressure fuel pump and front-mount intercooler to breathe new life to the 2.-liter four-cylinder.

06 2012 volkswagen golf r badgeless grille

In fact, during the dyno day at our Tuner GP the car put down 392hp to the wheels at 6700rpm, with 350 lb-ft at 5000rpm. With the boost set at 26.5psi, it had been a whisker shy of your 410hp HPA had predicted but a good increase across the stock 256hp at the crank.

Undoubtedly, a few of that increase was on account of the stainless downpipe and mid-pipe with 100-cell cat employed to keep the device free-flowing. The quad-chamber bypass exhaust is actually a work of art and also the subsequent sound is somewhere within a vicious growl as well as an air compressor purge, based on RPM.

Keeping the power under control is a Stage 3 Spec clutch, transferring drive to a set of gorgeous 19×8.5 BBS CH-R Titanium wheels and the 235/35 Continental ExtremeContact DW tires that were specified for participation in our Tuner GP.

Naturally, the build wouldn’t be complete without addressing how the car rotates into corners, so KW Clubsport coilovers were fitted to provide road manners and track-day prowess.

Inevitably, the Golf R’s Haldex AWD system could benefit from some tweaking, so HPA added a Haldex Gen4 Competition controller. This was designed to transfer more power to the rear wheels, reacting faster and more aggressively compared toline of European big brake kits utilizing Baer calipers. The R involves a halt with six-piston calipers up front, clamping 355mm rotors with factory rear calipers and slotted rotors.

The result of the chassis and engine mods was really a best lap time throughout the Streets of Willow circuit of 1: 32.035 during the Tuner GP. However, it was achieved with some rather worn tires as the result of intensive set-up laps during the morning practice sessions. There’s no doubt they needed a tad bit more time in a vehicle and fresh tires however it represents a valiant attempt for a car that was only completed several days prior.

So, while no area was skipped in the build, HPA laid out a clear path to transforming your R into a badass street car that’s equally at home on the track or maybe in the passing lane.

It’s not a built motor with standalone engine management, either, though no, it’s not a simple weekend project. Rhuari’s car represents a happy medium, and you know he was happy to discover he have got to keep each of the parts except the turbo… but we’re pretty sure HPA has another on its shelf if he decided he can’t live without its Tuner GP spec.

How to Actually Earn A Buck In Today’s Music Industry

One of the greatest ruses in the American dream is the fact to be a musician you have to be broke and broken, never seeing a profit, never making enough money to even get a new set of strings. Well I’m here to tell you that it is possible to indeed generate profits and it’s not impossible like you’re lead to believe by the man. It’s also not the way you think, though it is possible and it’s not as hard as you think. It used to be you needed to get signed to deal and they’d give you millions and you’d be rich just like that. In fact, which had been never the situation, it’s exactly how it seemed from the outside. But here’s ways to actually earn an income being a musician.

It’s All About the Merch

DTLANISSANAUG31-7-1

You really money in ways that maybe your dad’s band never was required to. People still want to spend money on the music that they can like, it’s just that they no longer feel the need to spend money for the actual music itself. If you’re a musician, you can either sit around whining about it and posting to Facebook about how exactly no one buys music anymore, or you can do something about it and think beyond the box, We’re so employed to downloading stuff and getting the actual tunes free of charge that. That’s where creative and interesting merchandise is needed. Sell fun cool things with your logo (like beer koozies). If you want to sell your actual music, hand design the CD cases or market it on vinyl, also. Make it the commodity worth collecting.

Hit the Road

DTLANISSANAUG31-7-2
