FE Race And Reunion Photos: A Celebration Of Everything FE Powered

All things FE baby, that’s what the FE Race and Reunion is all about at Beaver Springs Dragway. Thanks to Joe Grippo we’ve got tons of photos from all over the event, so check out the latest gallery right here, and use the link below if you missed any of our other galleries.

(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) The FE Ford engine has been obviously out of production for, what, 40 plus years? Yet there is a group the hardest of hardcore devotees who once a year gather in the hills of Central Pennsylvania at a quaint little dragstrip, to celebrate all variants of this famed FoMoCo mill. From 352’s to 390’s to the mighty Cobra Jets and Cammers, plus all the other displacements were in the house, at Beaver Springs Dragway.

The FE’s were smoking the rear tires and yanking the fronts skyward for like 3 days straight! Big mid-century 60’s muscle, Fairlane’s, Mustangs and trucks filled the pits and the show field right alongside a bunch of late model Fords with the venerable big block transplanted into them. It’s truly Nirvana for Ford fanatics, it is a sight to behold. A few Ford legends who made their bones with the FE Ford were in the house and holding court. Ohio George Montgomery, Al Joniec and John Vermeersch among others were telling stories and answering questions non-stop. The swap meet was robust with blocks, heads, intakes, cranks and everything else FE related just waiting to get scarfed up for the next build.

If you even remotely dig Fords and if you own an FE, you owe it to yourself to be on the Beaver property in 2022 for the 10th (TENTH!) annual FE Race and Reunion. You will not regret it, but don’t take our word for it, check out the galleries and see for yourself.

Oh yes, Hot Rod Drag Week is back! With nearly 400 entries starting the crazy week of drag n’ drive competition, the first day had its fair share of oil downs and delays. Day two is when that stuff typically settles down as the field shrinks and the more well built iron forges ahead. David Freiburger is carrying the announcing duties by himself this year as I had commitments to NHRA which I needed to uphold during a rockin’ stretch of back to back to back to back races. He’ll be sounding like Louie Armstrong by Friday but he’s doing a heck of a job.

The drag nomads have moved their way onto Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwlk, Ohio for their second day of action! Watch the stream below. See the big runs, see the cringey runs, see potentially record breaking runs!

PDRA Northern Nationals Photo Coverage Starts Right Here!

Well a few weeks back I finally got to attend a PDRA event, the Northern Nationals. Last year was to be the first event at my home track, Maple Grove Raceway but we all know how most of 2020 went. This year Tyler Crossnoe and company made it happen and the racers showed up and beat up on the Grove’s sticky surface. The PDRA (Professional Drag Races Association) runs on the 1/8 mile with some of the baddest doorslammers and insanely fast dragsters on the planet.

With classes like Extreme Pro Stock, Pro Nitrous and Pro Boost, Pro Outlaw 632 and Pro Street all manner of big tire was covered. Strong fields in these classes made for tight qualifying and killer eliminations. JR Carr took Extreme Pro Stock, Pennsylvania’s own “Mountain Man” Mike Achenback crushed the Pro Nitrous class, Pro Boost was won by Kevin Riverbank, Wes Distefano came out on top of the Pro Outlaw 632 group and Tim Essick in his Brown Sugar Mustang was victorious in Pro Street.

PDRA also contests a full slate of Sportsman classes featuring Top Dragster and Top Sportsman, a Bracket Bash and even Junior Dragsters. Steve Drongowski was the Top Dragster champ and Nick Meloni took the trophy in Top Sportsman. Joe Ithieu was last person standing in the all run Bracket Bash, while Zach Starkey took the Pro Jr. title and Donald O’Meara won the Top Jr. crown.

In closing, the PDRA put on a very professional, efficient weekend of racing while fighting some nasty heat and humidity plus a few dreaded rain incidents. The track surface and schedule never suffered, and downtime was minimal. All in all, it was a very well done event and I had a blast. Can’t wait until next year to hopefully do it again at the 2022 Northern Nationals at the Grove.

That’s right folks, we’re SUPER excited to be bringing you 5 days of awesome bracket racing from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway at the 2021 K&N Spring Fling Million presented by Optima Batteries. While the big show starts on Wednesday, we’ll be live on Tuesday afternoon for the American Race Cars, Todd’s Extreme Custom Paint, Dragster Shootout Race. The winner will take home a rolling American Race Cars 240″ Dragster chassis with a complete custom paint job by Todd’s. This is a big shootout for 32 cars and will be the perfect way to start off the weekend here in Vegas.

We will be live Tuesday afternoon, and then all day Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for all the racing action. Check out the flyer below for details on the payout and event prizes, but know that Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday racers will be going after $30,000 to win. Friday is the big money Million race which has a guaranteed purse of $250,000 to the winner regardless of entries. We’re pretty sure this race is going to be off the hook based on our last west coast race this year. Given the fact that all the heavy hitters are heading cross country for it as well, this promises to be one hell of an event.

Long Lost Film Of ’66 Winternationals Found! Sunday Eliminations With Packed Pomona Grandstands!

(Film and Words by Darr Hawthorne ) In 1965 Santa brought me a new 16mm Bolex film camera, rather than using my dad’s cameras any-longer. The first opportunity I had to use it was on the Pomona Raceway starting line at the 1966 NHRA Winternationals, I’d been granted an NHRA photo/media credential with my best friend, at 14 years of age, lucky I know. It was my third time on the line at the Big Go West.

These ten minutes of original footage shows off some of the Top Fuel legends like the Greek, Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen and Tony Nancy and event winner Mike Snively in Roland Leong’s Hawaiian. Leong recently said of the win, “Thats my wagon (at the end of the video). Must be 1966 and yes we won.” Leong added, “ After that we were on our way out of town going on tour to our first date and a ’55 Chevy towing a ’55 Chevy racecar side swiped a short bridge (while) passing us and then served into us. Wagon ended up upside down, trailer broke off and went about 1/4 mile into the desert. Both ’55 Chevy’s ended up upside down. Thankfully NO ONE got hurt.” Adding, “Thats my story and I’m sticking to it”. 

1966 also presented a showcase to the early evolution from stock-bodied cars into nitro funny cars; Jack Chrisman’s red Comet, Gas Ronda’s Mustang, Maynard Rupp’s rear-engined Hemi-Powered Chevelle, Don Gay’s blown GTO, Steve Bovan’s altered wheelbase Nova, Joe Davis’ Colt 45 Mustang, Preston Honea’s Marlin and Bob Davis in the Jolly Green Giant Impala. These lumbering giants were relegated to the dragster classes, since NHRA had not yet recognized a true funny car class.

Along with them, was Super Stocker Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins in his ’66 Nova and event winner Shirley Shahan’s “Drag-on Lady” Plymouth Fury, the first woman to win a National Eliminator, at this Winternationals. 

There’s Big John Mazmanian and Stone Woods & Cook with a bunch of AA/Gas Supercharged monsters as well as some early Modified and Comp Eliminator cars too, in front of the packed Pomona Raceway grandstands. 

Grab a hot dog and a cold one for ten minutes in the Way Back machine for some long misplaced film from the ’66 Winternationals.

I’ve driven dragsters, but my first love are door cars. They are fun, can be as quick as you want to go, and they just feel right. I do like the occasional roadster as well, but prefer those with the driver on one side or the other instead of sitting in the middle like a funny car or altered. Good thing for me that the American Door Slammer Nationals are LIVE this weekend thanks to our friends at MotorManiaTV. Any door car. Any left hand drive roadster. Any reason to have fun. This is a must watch event that you won’t want to miss this weekend.

Held at the famed Piedmont Dragway, this Loose Rocker Promotions event is one of the highlights of 2020. During a year where we have all been cooped up and have had so many cancelled events, this is one of those that feels really good to see happening before we get into the final weekends of racing for 2020. This is going to be a year to remember for sure, and whoever wins this event is going to remember it because of the real money they got to put into their pocket.

SDBA Drag Boat Races Will Be LIVE Here On BANGshift Starting Sunday Morning!

That’s right folks, we’ve got more Southern Drag Boat Association racing coming to you live right here at BANGshift.com. We were live Saturday morning and will be live again Sunday morning around 9 am Central Time. We had an awesome time bringing you their Paris Texas event a few months ago and are happy to announce that their El Reno Oklahoma event this Saturday and Sunday will be LIVE in it’s entirety right here! We cannot stress enough just how cool it is to watch the drag boats hauling ass across the water. We’re talking 3 second 1/8 mile boats, and all kinds of combinations. Hydros, Jets, Flat bottoms, Pro Mods, Super Stock, and so much more. The racing action is fun, the scenery is cool, and the people are an absolute riot.

When we did the event in Paris, the welcome that we got from everyone at the SDBA, and the racers in general, was absolutely amazing. They treated us like family, fed us, welcomed us with open arms, and were so genuinely thrilled to have us on site that most were acting like kids in a candy store.

This weekend is supposed to be in the low 80’s, with great conditions for racing on the water, and I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of record breaking runs we might see. Tune in Saturday morning, at 8 am Central, as we kick off the racing action. You won’t want to miss it.

For the last few years people have been talking about putting on big money bracket races just for the Jr. Dragster crowd, and to answer that call is The Summer Blast race at Beaver Springs Dragway where Jr. Dragster racers will be going after $10,000! Can you imagine winning $10,000 at 10 years old? Or even at 15? Hell no, but these kids are going for it. We’re talking big stakes, killer reaction times, and family for for the weekend. It’s The Summer Blast and all the action is live right here thanks to our friends at MotorManiaTV. What I love about this race is that there is nothing else going down the track that the Jr. Dragster drivers have to play second fiddle to. This is their chance to be the stars, outside of the Jr. Finals and those kinds of points races. This is all about them, the way it should be, and I imagine the energy there is intense and fun. I bet the parent crew chiefs are feeling the pressure today too!
